The Trend formed in 2001 in the mountains of Western Maryland. Frontman Kenny Tompkins and drummer Brian Twigg had met while playing in hardcore bands and had bonded over a love of melodic pop music. After a brief start as a 3-piece with Ronnie "Scronald" Lohr on guitar and Tompkins on Bass, The Trend recruited local pop-punker Dan Stevens on guitar and total-shredder Cullen Tierney on bass. They parted ways with Lohr and Tompkins took over on lead guitar. From there the Trend quickly crystalized into a live force to be reckoned with. Pulling from their shared experience playing in hardcore bands, they stormed the stage thrashing around violently with guitars and nearly bashing into each other every other second. This energy combined with the catchy songs and made the Trend a local hit in their tiny town of Frostburg, Md. After just a handful of local shows local hip-hop artist and label owner, Jim Frazier, graciously offered to release the group's first album on his now defunct Pro-Gravity imprint and The Trend's Self-titled debut was born.
